edit: I hope we can talk soccer at least until the World cup is over...hopefully we can be civil and avoid the name-calling and inflammatory remarks that caused the ruckus last time. Usually I wouldn't start a soccer discussion after the previous incident , but what has happened is too shocking to remain silent on...hopefully we can talk about it in a civilized manner.

1. England got eliminated AGAIN by Portugal ... if you remember 4 years ago Portugal eliminated England on penalty kicks (I think) , and 4 years later Portugal eliminated England in the same manner. But that is nothing compared to what happened in the later match...where

2. France eliminated Brazil in what was probably one of the most shocking events of the cup...Brazil has been knocked out by France in 2 of the last 3 world cups. Congratulations to either Gooky or Slew who said France would win it all , they certainly are on their way. I myself thought Brazil would go all the way , and it was looking like they would but France played better. Watching this match , I was reminded of why I usually ignore soccer other than the cup. Once France went up 1-0 , there was a strong chance they would win the match. No opponent has ever come back in World cup play from a 2-0 deficit while they come back from 2-0 all the time in baseball , hockey , etc. It's just too hard to score in soccer , and I don't like it.

All credit to gooky for identifying France. Going into the tournament I thought they were too old. But I did pick France today. I remember that '98 final very well when France bullied the Brazilians all game. It's true one goal came in extra time to make it 3-0 but the entirety of the game could easily have been worse than 3-0. After watching France overcome Spain with the two late goals I realized they had more left than I thought, and the matchup against Brazil would unfold somewhat similar to '98, minus the easy headers. Actually, I was surprised Brazil managed so many late changes to equalize. The South American teams are always exposed somewhat when the Cup is in Europe, although Argentina could easily have defeated Germany this time.

Four years ago Brazil eliminated England, 2-1. I remember because I bet on England as a big underdog and they took a 1-0 lead before losing. Portugal might have eliminated them on penalites in Euro 2004. England was impotent the last game other than Beckham's free kick so going into penalties today was hardly surprising. At that point the Portugese goalie is superior. I was rooting for England all tournament long but you could see they had no punch, perhaps due to using the wrong system with only one forward. Plus Beckham at 34 didn't have much left other than set pieces. Rooney's idiotic tactic reminded me of Marcus Vick in the Gator Bowl.

You think he did it on purpose too? Honestly, I thought Rooney was fighting for the ball, and that it was accidental; he had his back to Carvalho, and he was clearly unbalanced as he battled for the ball. Rooney is one of the most fair competitors I can think of, so I'm surprised so many people thought he did it intentionally.
As for soccer being a low scoring sport, I think as Americans, we want the end product, the goal, and satisfaction. Soccer is a subtle sport; there is a lot that goes on in between goals, from the epic battles to gain control of the midfield, to the momentious opportunities that open up during the game. For me, it was very gratifying to see a player like Zidane, who so many people wrote off as too old, trap the ball, flick it into the air over ****'s head, bring it back down, and lay it off to a oncoming French player. The more you watch soccer, the more you appreciate the work players put in, and the way they struggle to make sure that their team can move the ball around freely, while denying the other team. The game starts to make sense, and you appreciate how deep soccer is. When people complain about how Argentina should have substituted Messi in the game with Germany, instead of Cruz, just because he is a young star, it sounds so hollow and superficial. I'm not saying it was the right choice, but there were other important considerations that led Pekerman to choose Cruz, if you understand the game.

Yes. I was able to make them play through my WinDVD software however.

Yeah, those two profiles were somewhat different. I could open them via VLC but not QuickTime on my Macs. So I used ffmpegx and changed them to VCDmpeg2enc. You have to uncheck "author as VCD," and maybe a couple of other steps for best results.
