In the USA he is a head butter. Didn't you watch any of the newscasts today? I wrote newscasts, not just sportscasts. They were showing the incident over and again. Not exactly in a favorable light. More like mocking mode. I should have specified USA in my post last night, but you're kidding yourself if you think that mugging is not going to be a huge part of his resume and reputation worldwide. Rightly or wrongly, a high percentage of people focus on what you did last. The final high profile aspect of your career. It's not unlike Dan Rather, a tremendous journalist for decades but that memogate episode will probably be in the first paragraph of his obit since it came at the end of his career at CBS. Seriously, if I were Zidane I would postpone my retirement and play at least one or two more years so the final memory is not that head butt.

Mock him all you want. Maybe that's how many people feel, people who did not grow up watching Zidane. I can still remember how I cheered when Zidane ran straight for the goal, and deftly chipped the ball over the keepers outstretching hands, into the back of the net. The Juventus fans went insane as Zidane walked to the sidelines, bowing once and blowing kisses to his supporters. That will always be my memory of Zidane. I followed his career since 1998, from the high to the low in his last season at Real, and I guarantee that his fans still love and respect him.
He cannot go on, the World Cup was his absolute last gasp; a year ago, people where talking about how his skills were deteriorating. It is tragic that he somehow found the reserves to make it all the way to the final, through an impressive Spanish side, an always favorite Brazilian side, and a tricky Portuguese side, only to lose in the final.

I didn't say I was mocking him. But in this country where soccer isn't high profile you suddenly had that clip of Zidane being shown on the David Letterman Show amidst a flurry of jokes. On an MSNBC newscast they were running it in loops, head butt followed by head butt. I post on many sports sites and the reactions are predictable; longtime fans and big soccer fans defending him while the casual fans and non-soccer fans are calling him a moron and a disgrace. I can't fathom a few insults was enough to cause him to go off like that, jeopardize his reputation on the most hgh profile stage.

Just imagine how different it would have been if that header had been a few feet in either direction. A game winner and he'd be heralded in Beckenbauer terms. That's who Zidane remind me of, although more dynamic than Beckenbauer. But Franz was always the sportsman and remains that way.

I know, I was having visions 1998 when I saw that header. It seems strange to me that there are so many famous midfielders with such great ability with their head. Ballack and Gerrard (at least in that CL final) come to mind. But I agree, it would have been a beautiful finish to his career. I really don't like Henry anymore, I keep on thinking, if he only worked a little harder, it wouldn't have gone into overtime. He had a few good runs, but not nearly as much as he is capable of. It is also cruelly ironic that Trezeguet, the only striker that really fought for France, was the one that missed the penalty kick. I never thought he was a "come off the bench" type of player though. He needs time, and sadly the coach did not give it to him, but still expected him to perform. It's not true, but I can't help but feel that Trezeguet was scapegoated. I thought the final was the perfect opportunity for Domenech to be a little creative, and bring in Trezeguet and Henry. Leave Ribery on the bench; his play was largely irrelevant in the last game. He should work more on his link up play; don't become a C. Ronaldo.

I guess the thing that upsets me is how fickle some sport fans are. They say that Zidane is a genius, and that he is the greatest, and the minute he does something wrong, they call him an idiot. He is still the same person that brought such excitement to the game with his sublime skill. Don't get me wrong, he made a terrible mistake in the heat of the moment, but to come down on such a great man at his moment of weakness seems wrong to me.

Apparently, what drove Zidane to headbutt him were insults to his mother and sister. Zidane's mother is in the hospital too. Sort of sad, maybe he didn't mean to get personal, but with Zidane's situation, it was personal.
